Common Fire-resistant Glass and Processes

Common fire-resistant glass can be divided into the following five types according to different processes:

  • Composite fire-resistant glass:

It is a common and extremely popular transparent laminated composite fireproof glass in the domestic and foreign markets. It consists of two or more layers of flat glass with a transparent fireproof adhesive in the middle. The strength of its fireproofing mainly depends on the performance of the fireproof adhesive. Fireproof adhesives can generally be divided into two major categories: inorganic materials (sodium silicate or also known as water glass) and organic materials (acrylamide and flame retardants, etc.). When the fireproof glass encounters a fire, the adhesive will quickly foam and expand to form an insulating, fire-resistant and heat-insulating foam layer that can absorb a lot of heat. If it breaks in a fire, it can also bond the broken glass pieces to maintain the integrity of the fireproof glass without hurting people. The fireproof glass has good fire-resistant and heat-insulating properties, and also has a certain impact strength, but it has poor weather resistance, is easy to foam, lose transparency, and has reduced light transmittance. It is mostly used in the ceiling, partitions and partition walls of fireproof building separation areas inside the building.

  • Wired fireproof glass:

It is a composite glass body made by adding metal wire or mesh to the interlayer of organic film or inorganic adhesive between two layers of glass. After adding wire or mesh, it can not only improve the overall impact resistance of fireproof glass, but also can be connected with electric heating and security alarm system to play a variety of functions. The only defect of this fireproof glass is poor light transmittance.

  • Special fire rated glass:

Special fire rated glass refers to glass with special glass substrate, not ordinary flat glass. It mainly includes borosilicate fire rated glass, aluminosilicate fireproof glass, microcrystalline fire rated glass, etc. Their common main characteristics are: due to different components, the glass softening point is high, generally above 900℃, and the thermal expansion coefficient is low. It generally will not burst or deform due to high temperature under strong flames. In particular, microcrystalline fireproof glass, in addition to the above characteristics, also has high mechanical strength, high bending and compressive strength, good chemical stability and physical and mechanical properties. It also has the advantages of high softening temperature and small thermal expansion coefficient. They can be used as fireproof glass and are top-quality products.

  • High-strength single layer fire rated glass (soda-lime silicate):

High-strength single layer fire rated glass is a new type of fireproof material for buildings that uses soda-lime-silica float glass and physical or chemical tempering for surface enhancement. It has good light transmission and fire retardant properties. It is transparent like ordinary glass. After a few minutes of fire, it can prevent the spread of flames and heat transfer, and limit the fire to a small area near the fire point, playing a fire protection role. It still has good fire retardancy at high temperatures above 1200℃. This transparent fireproof safety glass can be used as an ideal fireproof material for fire doors, fire windows and fire partitions in public buildings such as high-end hotels, theaters, exhibition halls, airports, gymnasiums, hospitals, libraries, shopping malls, and other civil and public buildings without fire partition requirements.

  • Insulated and laminated fireproof glass:

With single layer fireproof glass as the base, it can be processed into laminated fireproof glass and hollow fireproof glass. Insulated fire rated glass is a new type of fireproof glass today. It is a new type of glass that integrates sound insulation, heat insulation and fireproof functions. Laminated fireproof glass formed by PVB lamination has the functions of blocking ultraviolet rays, sound insulation, and preventing self-explosion and falling.
